A Christmas Suprise

Hi! I have an awesome Christmas surprise for everyone. Here is an interview with Lauren Oliver author of Before I Fall and the upcoming book Delirium!

1. What inspired you to write your newest book Delirium? (it has a very interesting subject by the way)
Thank you! The idea for DELIRIUM came from an essay I read by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, in which he wrote that all great books were about love or death. The next day I was thinking about that quote--particularly about how and in what form a modern love story could be told--while I was on the treadmill at the gym. I was simultaneously watching a news story about a flu outbreak that had everyone freaking out about the possibility of a pandemic, and I was kind of marveling that people so easily go into panics about reports of these diseases, and at some point the two trains of thought--love, and disease--just sort of combined in my head.

2. Did you always want to be an author or was there some point where you wanted to be something else?
Well, I always knew I would write—I’ve always written—but I didn’t always intend to “be” a writer. For a long time I did ballet very seriously and thought I might be a dancer.

3. I know this isn't in the subject of your writing, but I read in your bio that you have ten tattoos and was intrigued ( I am a tattoo fan and can't wait to get my first one) What made you love tattoos? And of the ten describe your favorite?
I actually don’t have a favorite. All of my tattoos are extremely personal, and reflect either a big theme in my life, or an important person or event. I like tattoos because I’ve always liked symbolism—I’m drawn to it as a way of helping make sense of the twists and turns in my life. I guess that makes sense, given the fact that I see writing as a way of doing roughly the same thing.

4. If you were stranded on a desert island with only three books what would they be?
Remembrances of Things Past, by Proust—I’ve always wanted to read it and it’s loooong. Matilda, by Roald Dahl, for comfort, and a guide about surviving on a desert island by yourself.

5. If you had to choose one author as your favorite who would it be?
I can’t answer that! Not fair. It would be between: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Roald Dahl.

6. In one word describe your style of writing?
Evocative? (I hope.)

7. If you were a color what color would you be? And why did you choose that color?
Probably dark gray. First of all, that’s pretty much the color of everything I wear. But also, I don’t know—it’s dark, sure, but there’s also some ebbing to it, some hope for brightness. Like the color of the sky just as the sun is starting to creep up!

8. Are any of your characters inspired by someone you know or yourself?
Oh, sure. I always say this but in some ways I think novels are like dreams: every character is the writer, in some way, shape, or form. And I pull real-life details from people I know all the time, and write them into my characters. I feel it helps me know them and gives them vividness and dimensionality to me. If you don’t know your characters as a writer, there’s pretty much no chance that your readers will know them and find them realistic.

9. Who is your favorite book character?
Ever?? I’m not sure! So many. Matilda from Matilda; and Lyra from His Dark Materials; and Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice; and Hercule Poirot from the Agatha Christie mysteries, and Sherlock Holmes, etc etc.

Sharing Monday

Sorry for the delay I have been busy doing all kinds of Christmasy things! Okay since its only 5 days till Christmas and I am in a very Christmasy (If you haven't noticed this is now my new favorite word ;)) mood I have decided to share a great Christmas memory! I remember when I was in 3rd grade so I was about 8, my homeroom teacher Mrs.Leet who also happens to be still to this day my favorite teacher had given us all a little baggie with some kind of mix that she told us was reindeer food. I was so excited to take that little baggie of reindeer food home, so I could leave it for the reindeer. On Christmas eve I put it in a little plastic bowl and sat it on the front porch right before I went to sleep. And then I woke up at the crack of dawn the next morning and ran to open the front door and check on the food. I remember I was thrilled to see every last bit of the food gone and the bowl tipped on its side like something had attacked it. I was so excited I couldn't believe reindeer had been on my porch and ate the food I left for them!!! Even now 9 years later I can remember that day like it was yesterday! Ohhh how great it was to be a kid!
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas - Andrea

What I got this weekend

Hi! So I am not trying to brag but bookwise this was an awesome weekend :) On Saturday I went with my mom, little sister and grandparents to Lexigton to do some last minute Christmas shopping. Well part of my Christmas from my mom was going to be a gift card to borders, but when we got to the mall she decided to let me pick out a few books instead of a girftcard becasue she likes to have things wrapped under the tree for us to open. So not only did I get some awesome reads there we also stopped at half price books and walmart where I bought myself a few other great books. So here is what I got though I am not allowed to have the ones from borders until Christmas :).

From Borders:

1. Bright Young Things - Anna Godbersen

2. The Body Finder - Kimberly Derting

3. Siren - Tricia Rayburn

4. Beastly - Alex Finn

5. The Iron King - Julia Kagawa

Pretty good huh?! Then I bought these myself

1. The Boy Book - E. Lockhart

2. The Lying Games - Sara Shepard

New Thing From Now On Every Monday!

Hi! so from now on every monday is going to be share a bit of info day. I will post something about myself every Monday!

So for todays info I have decided to share how I came up with the name Just Your Average Everyday Teen Blogger for my blog name! So here's what happended, I was sitting in my room brainstorming ideas for a blog name and I was not having any luck. I have never been good at picking out names for things and I thought for sure I was going to end up stuck with a blog with no name, when I decided to put on some music to help me relax. I was hoping if I just started relaxing enough a name would just pop into my head. So I grab my i-Pod and put it on shuffle and the first song that comes on is a song called Extraordinary by Liz Phair, which has a line that goes like this: I am extraordinary, I am just your ordinary average everyday sane psycho supergoddess. Well as soon as I heard that line it hit me Average Everyday Teen Blogger! And there you have it folks the story of how this blog came to be named :) Hope you all have a great night - Andrea

And Now For That Big Suprise!!!

Happy Monday everyone! Well last week I mentioned a big surprise I would be posting today and so without further ado...... Here is an Interview with Amy Holder the author of The Lipstick Laws!!!

Interview

1. Your book sounds awesome! What first inspired you to write this book?

Thank you so much, Andrea! I wanted to write a fun take on the ups and downs of high school and the social hierarchies within it. April's quirky voice was the first thing that came to me as I was writing, so her character really inspired the whole story to evolve.

2. I read in your bio that you have a degree in psychology (psychology has always fascinated me & I plan to study it in collage) and a minor in sociology, Did you use that knowledge while writing your book? And do you think that knowledge helped you while writing your book?

Psychology is fascinating, isn't it? I've always been drawn to psychology because I'm naturally a people watcher. I'd much prefer observing and listening rather than being the center of attention, therefore, the study of human behavior has always intrigued me. This innate interest paired with my degree definitely helped me create characters, their interactions, dialogue and some of the plot points in my book. However, I think remembering the ups and downs and feelings I had as a teen was more of an influence than my psychology knowledge.

3. If you had to describe your book in one sentence what would you say?

The Lipstick Laws is a funny tale about a girl's plight with popularity, body image, boys, and getting revenge.

4. Are either of your main characters Britney or April modeled after yourself?

No, I didn't model either of them after myself. Although April does have some of my characteristics like naturally curly hair, a similar sense of humor, and a love of good sales. Some of her quirks were borrowed from a good childhood friend as well. Britney isn't molded after anyone I know, thankfully!

5. When was the first time you knew you wanted to be author?

I've always dreamed of being an author from the time I was very young. I've written for as long as I can remember, but for some reason it never dawned on me that being an author was an attainable profession until after college. Once I graduated, I realized that I wanted a job that I loved so much it wouldn't feel like work. Writing is that job... and I feel very lucky to have it now.

6. What are some of your favorite authors?

This is a tough question because I have so many! The ones who influenced me the most while growing up were Roald Dahl, Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, Shel Silverstein, S.E. Hinton, and Katherine Paterson. Nowadays, I also love Sophie Kinsella, J.K. Rowling, Alyson Noel, Eileen Cook, Meg Cabot, and Louise Rennison, just to name some.

7. What made you decide to write a book for young adults?

The short answer is I never really grew up. :-) The longer answer is that I remember my own teen years very clearly, and I don't think my voice from those years ever left me. Also, I've had plenty of experience working with teens/young adults, so I've always felt connected to that age group.

8. I love the cover of your book! What made you choose that specific cover?
Thank you so much, but all the credit has to go to my amazing cover designer, Carol Chu! Most people don't realize that authors don't usually have much say over the look of their cover designs. The cover art is typically headed by the publisher's design department and marketing team. That's why it's such a big deal when authors unveil their covers...because they're usually new to the author as well. Luckily, I love my cover and am so thankful that my designer did such a good job!

Book Review: The Frenzy by Francesca Lia Block

Front flap reads: Liv has a secret. Something happened to her when she was thirteen. Something that changed everything. Liv knows she doesn't belong anymore - not in her own skin, not in her family..... not anywhere. The only time she truly feels like herself is when she's with her boyfriend, Corey, and in the woods that surround her town. But in the woods a mysterious watches Liv. In the woods a pack of wild boys lurk. In the woods Liv learns about the curse that will haunt her forever. The curse that started the frenzy four years ago. And that may cause it again all too soon. While Corey and Liv's love bind them together, Liv's dark secret threatens to tear them apart as she struggles to understand who - or - what she really is. And by the light of the full moon, the most dangerous secrets bare their claws....

This book was definitly a page turner. When I first started reading it, I thought this is kinda weired... but after only a couple chapters I was hooked. It's full of mystery and has you constently full of questions. I would call it a fast paced thriller, that anyone who enjoys a good mystery/fantasy would be sure to enjoy. I also found that the characters are very likeable and make you want to root for them. All around it was a great read! 5 stars!

Something awesome coming up

This coming Monday I have a big suprise comeing up! Wanna know what it is? Then you will have to check out my blog on Mondayyyyyy (:
